Mexico City, more than 3 times the population of Switzerland lives in this town (> 20 millions). A lot of private traffic in the streets, a good system of public transportation (buses and Metro). You enter the metro with a ticket for 3 Pesos (about 0,30 SFR) and you may travel to any destination of this huge high frequence and speedy subway system. A lot of the rich cultural Prehispanic heritage of whole Mexico you find in famous museums ('Museo Nacional de Antropologia (MNA)' and 'Museo del Templo Mayor (MTM)'). Below, a selection of objects from the MNA Objects from the MTM The Spanish
conquerors used a lot of the material (stones), having been used for Aztec
pyramids (Teocalli of Tenochtitlan), to build on the same site a new center of
Mexico (Zocalo with the Catedral Metropolitana and surroundings). The decision
to excavate the remnants of the Aztec 'Templo Mayor 'was taken in 1978. For doing this, some
buildings of Spanish origin had to be destroyed. Details of the excavations (left, the head of a serpant,
middle, a wall of skulls, right, an integral view, seen from the Catedral). The 'Catedral Metropoletana' seen across the Zocalo. During my visits beginning May and June 2010, the Zocalo is a place of permanent political demonstrations, but in the same time a craft fair. Details of the Clocktower of the 'Catedral', wooden staircase (right). Further views of the 'Catedral'. Details from inside of the 'Catedral'. Around the Zocalo. Entrance (below, left) of the Palacio National (middle), seen from the 'Catedral'. Video, street-view close to the Zocalo. On the walls of the main staircase of the Palacio Nacional and on the first floor above the Patio are these impressive murals from Diego Rivera, painted around 1930. Middle of the staircase (I tried to produce a panorama, but I did not succeed, as a consequence, here the bits and pieces)
Left staircase Right staircase Details of staircase pictures The landscape on the painting below (left) should give an impression of the view of Tenochtitlan (Aztec Mexico), when the Spaniards arrived. On the right a detail of the picture from the left side. Production of jewelery (right) Beautifull is the view from the top of the 44th floor of the Torre Latinoamericana (below, middle), built allready in 1956. View of the Palacio de Bellas Artes (left) and of the Zocalo (right), with the 'Catedral Metropolitana' and the 'Palacio National'. Unfortunately, they close early (8.00 pm). Instead of having a dinner in the restaurant, I had to be happy with a beer from the bar. Reforma Coyoacan Acapulco Taxco Teotihuacan Xochimilco Yucatan_Chichen_Itza Coba-Tulum Cancun
