- Art - Jewelery - Design - Fotos by Peter Leister - YUCATAN, I spell Cancun, Valladolid, Chichen Itza, Coba, Tulum and Club Med. Once landed in Cancun I went directly to a car rental company. Signing the contract, I had the impression, I sign my sentence for death. After having checked my white car for any damages -one door was massively damaged- I had to discuss with the clerc that I wanted him to arrange, that the tank was completely filled. After a discussion of about 30 minutes, this was possible to do this on site. I had to insist that I was not eager, to follow his discription to the 'simple and easy to be found' next gasoline station. When bringing back my car one week later, I understood, why he wanted me to fill the tank on my own. The price of gasoline at the car rental company is much higher than at a normal gasoline station. They can charge the last customer with the high price without having used the expensive gasoline. Little later, I have entered the high way to Valladolid, concerned, that I might arrive late when it's allready dark, making it difficult to find a hotel. Dark clouds appeared in front of me announcing some rain. I asked myself, where are the buttoms for closing the window. I could not find them, allthoug I have searched everywhere. After the toll station I stopped and was about to call assistance from the car rental campany, when I finally found out, there were handles for mechanical closing of the window. Uff! I arrived in Valladolid, it rained massively and it was dark. In Valladolid, they have no street names but only numbers. The odd ones go from east to west and the other ones from north to south, or inverse. This seemed to make it simple, to find my way. But this numeric system is combined with a lot of one way circulation, so it took me some time to find my way. Court in my hotel in Valladolid (above), church with entrances and central place in front of the church (below). Valladolids nice historical hispanic center.
Having seen Valladolids center in the morning, I took my car to visit Chichen Itza, famous Maja Ruins about 50 km away. Once arrived, that's how I saw the dominant pyramid El Castillo, or Pyramid of Kukulcan. Its construction details contain all necessary elements for forming a calender with the curiosity, that at the vernal and autumnal equinoxes the morning and afternoon sun produces a light and shadow illusion of a serpent descending the side of El Castillos staircase. Once again the proof, that I was there.
Details of the reliefs of some of the lot of other buildings an the Chichen Itza site. When preparing the fotos for being integrated in this homepage, I was surprised by the lot of details, that can be seen on these pictures. Please click on the fotos to have an enlarged view of the pictures.
Plataforma de los Craneos - Platform of Skulls. This platform held the heads of sacrificial victims.
Views of some of the lot of other buildings, e.g. El Caracol, Edificio de las Monjas & la Iglesia, Gran Juego de Pelota at the Chichen Itza site. Below: Video of some details of Chichen Itza. I have realized, that I pass my camera to rapidly from one spot to an other. Sometimes it may be helpfull to stop the video to enjoy some of the details. Grupo de las Mil Columnas / Group of the Thousand Columns Nature on site. In the middle the Cenote Sagrado, a huge sunken well/ sinkhole. The Cenotes are frequent in this region, some are very huge with big portions under ground. You may swim and dive in a lot of these cenotes. A Maya girl selling broidery.
